SOME BIRDS HAVE PRETTY INTERESTING NAMES.

The White-browed tit-warbler is one that comes to mind right away when I think of these birds. Even though it wasn’t actually named after a part of the human anatomy, the name sounds acceptable to modern ears even though it was originally intended to be insulting. What is the first thing that comes to mind when I say that there is a bird with long legs whose name sounds like it is named after office workers and which has eyelashes that would make many models green with envy?

The Secretary bird is unmistakable, to say the least, as it resembles an eagle in its body shape and has long, elegant legs in addition to its eagle-like height. It has red facial skin and plumage on its upperparts, and its lesser median wing coverts are a blue-gray color. These characteristics give it the appearance of an Indian headdress. The color of the underwing coverts ranges from a lighter gray to a gray-white color.

Standing at up to 4 ft 3 in both males and females look very similar. Although males typically have longer tail feathers, shorter heads, and more head plumes, females can have longer head feathers.

Preferring open rangeland and Savana, where it strides around on its long legs looking for reptiles, mammals, and insects which it bludgeons to death with its legs.

Apparently, the bird’s name came about when Dutch settlers in Africa called the bird “Sagittarius,” but the local farmers called them “Secretarius.” The latter name prevailed, and over time, the position came to be known as the secretary.

Secretary birds typically form monogamous pairs that are responsible for defending a territory that can be as large as 19 square miles. It is possible for breeding to take place at any time of the year; however, the end of a late dry season is typically when it occurs most frequently. A nest is built, usually at the top of a tree by both male and female, and 1 – 3 eggs are laid at different times. Once the eggs have hatched, the newly hatched chicks are cared for and fed by both of the adults, who take turns doing so. Typically, young leave the nest between 75 and 80 days after they have been there.

Even though they are birds of prey, secretary birds do most of their hunting on land, tracking down and capturing their prey with their feet. They will either hunt in pairs or in family flocks, and they will take long strides as they stalk through their natural environment. Insects and other small mammals, such as mice, hare, and mongoose, make up the majority of their diet. They also eat things like locusts and beetles. They also eat, crabs, lizards, snakes, tortoises, small birds, along with their eggs.
