Horror movies can always cheer many of us up.

It’s an odd thing to say considering that the main plot of most of them involves people being killed by terrifying beasts, but for movie buffs, it’s always a treat. Even though it’s sad to see a fan-favorite get hacked in the back with an axe, the element of surprise is a big part of the entertainment value. This is not lost on artists. Indeed, this is why there are numerous depictions of villains in art.

Do people often depict human characters in their horror movie artwork? The short answer is no, I haven’t. What’s the reason? The villain is the one who stays with you, and if the monster is cool enough, you might even find yourself rooting for them. And it’s more interesting to depict horrifying monsters than frightened humans.

An artist and director from Canada, currently based in a Twin Peaks-esque waterfront community north of Toronto. His diet of 80s horror movies and Guinness keeps him hyperactive and sleep deprived.

I do both digital and analogue work, though the latter is much more common these days. It saves me the cost of purchasing traditional art supplies and makes it a little simpler to make alterations (especially when working on larger projects for studios or distributors). In my view, both digital and traditional forms of art are worthy pursuits, each with its own set of difficulties to overcome. -Matthew
