The Directors clearly weren’t thinking right.
Considering how rapidly society is evolving and how much more receptive people are becoming to new ideas, this is clearly the case. It’s challenging to watch old episodes of a show or even an older season because they are tied to a different era. It’s possible that something that was once humorous is now deeply offensive.
Bob’s Burgers usually gets this balance between being funny and not being offensive just right, but there are occasions when they fall short. For instance, consider the following examples of times they completely missed the mark and produced laugh-out-loud embarrassing jokes.
So, please, scroll down and have a look.
#1 A love triangle.
When handled well, a love triangle can be entertaining. It’s extremely awkward to watch as Aunt Gayle flirts inappropriately with Bob, asking for his opinion on her ‘naked’ body.
#2 Tina’s crushes.
Without Tina, the show wouldn’t be nearly as funny. And it’s all because she can’t seem to get a handle on her feelings. Despite the rumour that she has 25 crushes at once, her youth should not be forgotten.
#3 Marijuana farm.
After being let go by Bob, the kids find work on a marijuana farm. Enough said.
#4 Knock out.
Being high on an adult animated show is not something new. But when it’s taken to the extreme of Bob beating up kids, it stops being funny and becomes wrong.
#5 Free candy.
A burger really does bear that name, believe it or not. It’s obviously offensive, and I don’t think I need to explain why.
#6 Taking it too far.
If they hadn’t made Gene serve a man who clearly looked creepy, the last joke might not have been as bad. As for his “why him?” query: “Probably because he’s too fat to be groped,” they said.
#7 My first boy.
One must never mistake another person’s gender. After Tina revealed she had her first kiss with a boy, however, that is precisely what her friends did. A second man, who had also been caught on camera flirting with the trans woman, chimed in with the same sentiment.
#8 Autistic spectrum.
Maybe Tina has autism, maybe she doesn’t. However, Gene decided to use toothpicks to determine for himself whether or not she is. After she made a mistake, he remarked that she must be the “worst kind of autistic.”
#9 Trans people.
It would appear that making transgender people the punchline of jokes is a favourite past time for them. Throughout the entire episode where three transgender women were introduced, they were referred to as “transvestites” by the cast and audience alike.
I’m sure you can see why that’s unacceptable on your own.
#10 Butts everywhere.
It’s not offensive to make jokes about private parts, and I enjoy butts as much as the next guy. Although, after a while, it does become boring. They should really just stop using that joke.
