The male’s white belly and vent provide an attractive contrast to the male’s violet back. In contrast, members of this species’ female and juvenile populations have streaked brown and white bellies, making them appear more similar to thrushes. All of them, on the other hand, have the same dark bill and bright yellow eyes.

The female of this bird, which is primarily a migratory species but can be found resident in some areas, constructs her nest approximately two meters off the ground, typically in the fork of a tree. The nest is woven together with bits of grass and animal droppings. After that, she spends the next 12 to 14 days tending to a clutch that contains two to four eggs that are blue with spots of reddish-brown.
