First, let’s talk about how service animals differ from emotional support animals. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) only applies to service animals, not emotional support animals. Being separated from a service dog poses a real risk to its owner because of the assistance the dog provides. Although dogs that help their owners cope with emotional distress are welcome and adorable, they do not pose a life-threatening threat if separated from their owners.

The OP has a service dog because she is epileptic. To relax, the OP and their service dog dined at a local cafe. Unfortunately, Karen’s nosiness and lack of respect led her to investigate the service dog’s credentials. At one point during their meal, she became so disruptive that the OP had to tell her to “STFU and sit down.” And, we feel compelled to add, not without good reason. The OP isn’t a jerk at heart, but they worry that they came across that way here. We insist that the OP is entitled to a peaceful dinner without interruption from rude guests.
