Mountain gorillas, along with a great number of other species, have become critically endangered as a direct result of the widespread destruction of their natural habitat. Their population has experienced a precipitous fall over the past few years. In addition to this, another human activity that places the wildlife in danger is poaching.

There have been significant efforts made in the name of conservation to bring the gorilla population back to its former levels, and Virunga National Park can serve as a very instructive example along these lines. About a quarter of the world’s mountain gorilla population can be found here, totaling somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 individuals. However, there is still a significant amount of work to be done!
