The Artist Depicts Mythical Creatures as Infants, and They Are Adorably Dangerous

Babies are adorable.

However, it’s possible that they’re monsters in a strict sense. Even human infants, you know, can drain you completely. It’s no surprise that these baby monsters are terrifying, especially since some of them also possess terrifying abilities. Really, it’s great to see such diverse works of art, from Medusa’s daughter to a baby phoenix.

Siswanto, the artist responsible for these works, set out to make something completely original rather than merely reimagine classic monsters in a modern context. Who hasn’t seen a statue of Medusa or a Hydra? There’s no reason not to change course and discover something fresh. If you’re ready to see some strangely cute infants, keep scrolling down.

When I was at Caravan Studio, one of my clients was Baby Beastiary. Metal Weave Games used the money for a Kickstarter project. I assisted them with the visuals for their role-playing game book centred around infant creatures.

Volumes 1 and 2 are where I made the most significant contributions, and I also assisted with the book’s art direction. This project has taught me a great deal, not only about making adorable miniature versions of well-known animals, but also about taking the time to carefully observe things like an animal’s posture, movement, and overall body size and shape. -Siswanto

I don’t recall ever seeing monster babies, but I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. I never would have pictured them this way, but then again I don’t usually sit around daydreaming about monster offspring or wondering how Medusa would have offspring. Why? Because the ramifications are terrifying nonetheless. So, let us just appreciate these works of art and leave it at that.
